Pilgrimage as a driver of tourism growth
Pilgrimage tourism can become an important component of the growth in tourist flows between Russia and Jordan. The dynamics of the indicators confirm the potential of this direction – in 2026, the passenger traffic of Royal Jordanian Airlines on the Russian route increased by 11%.
The Minister of Tourism and Antiquities of Jordan, Emad Naim Hijazin, outlined the strategic role of developing pilgrimage tourism to Jordan during a roadshow in Moscow for representatives of the tourism sector, with the participation of media representatives and representatives of Domodedovo International Airport.
Royal Jordanian is the only air carrier operating flights between Russia and Jordan. Direct flights to Amman operate three times a week — on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. “We see religious tourism as a genuine opportunity to strengthen tourism flows between Jordan and Russia — not only from Russia to Jordan, but also from Jordan to Russia.
We are confident that this segment will continue to grow significantly in the coming period", the minister noted.The place of the Baptism of the Lord, Bethany, also known as Al‑Mahtas (“immersion” in Arabic), is located an hour’s drive from Amman (50 kilometers).
In 2012, a Russian “Hospitality House at the Site of the Baptism of the Lord” opened on the banks of the Jordan River — a hotel for pilgrims.
During a single trip to Jordan, travelers can see ancient Petra and Jerash, the Dead Sea and the Red Sea, and go to the Wadi Rum desert. Russian citizens enjoy a visa‑free regime — they can stay in Jordan for up to 30 days per visit.
